BEHIND THE WHEEL

Words and Music by Anne M Carley © 1994 – 2002

You know that feeling you get?

You know that feeling you get
when you’ve been driving down the two-lane and it’s late at night
When in an instant
a big truck comes out of nowhere headed right at you
and you don’t collide but you smell something acid in the air
Like some truck molecules scraped some car molecules
in a chemical reaction
as you clipped each other passing on the turn

It’s getting to be better behind the wheel
What scares me is how close it came to being real
A very near miss

You know that feeling you get
Makes you want to pull it over when you get the chance
And take a breather
and you wait until you catch up and your heart slows down
That’s the feeling I had when I left after lunch at the cafe
Like some love molecules scraped some hate molecules
in the chemical reaction
as you clip each other passing on the turn

Will it keep getting easier behind the wheel
Or will I wind up buried in a mess of glass and steel
Will my life end behind the wheel?

You know that feeling you get
It’s a feeling that I’ve gotten many times before
When in an instant
you can see your eager heart has brought you in harm’s way
That’s the feeling I had when I saw once again it was not love.
Just some life molecules that scraped some death molecules
in the chemical reaction
as you clip each other passing on the turn

Will it become a pleasure behind the wheel
Or will I always shudder, expecting tires to squeal
Or will it change behind the wheel?
Some day will I be glad I stayed behind the wheel
And will I know a joy that danger can conceal
behind the wheel, behind the wheel
