Two friends walk into a bar.  He tells her about summers with his family in the Thousand Islands.  It gradually dawns on her he is talking about the same place her mother went in the summer with her family, years before, only her mother had different names for the places.  One name she dredges up from dim memory – ‘Gananoque’ – and he recognizes it.  Confirmed!  Same places, different names and times.  Same looks of happy disbelief on his, and her mother’s faces, when they remember it.  A song is begun.

A woman smiles, and gently
tells of summers with her sister
when the two of them were children
on an island in the water
warmed by oddly Southern currents
haloes hovering above those longer days
she tells of

Warm Saint Lawrence weather
The softly shifting air….

And seven decades later
In the never-sleeping city
As she whiles away an evening
The old woman’s daughter listens
While a man she’s known forever
Finds that halo in a barroom’s smokey haze
He tells of

Warm Saint Lawrence weather
The softly shifting air
Gananoque, Bath, and Clayton
Just the names can take her there
Warm Saint Lawrence weather
Cape Vincent on the pier
Alexandria –  Amherst View
Saint Lawrence weather summer atmosphere

She dreams of heading Northward
From the caverns of Manhattan
To the beauty and the wildness
And the simple summer rhythms
That her friend recalls so fondly
He describes a storm, the light, the sunset blaze
And tells of

Warm Saint Lawrence weather
The softly shifting air
Gananoque, Bath, and Clayton
Just the names can take her there
Warm Saint Lawrence weather
Cape Vincent on the pier
